This misunderstanding resulted in the goal’s disallowance, a decision that contradicted the clear and obvious factual error and should have led to the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, as stated by PGMOL.

In response to this incident, both Darren England and his assistant VAR, Dan Cook, faced repercussions, being removed from matchday duties for the subsequent week. Liverpool, in a statement released on Sunday night, expressed deep dissatisfaction with the flawed application of the laws of the game, emphasizing the undermining of sporting integrity due to the erroneous decision-making process.

Despite the VAR team’s realization of their mistake within ten seconds of the game restarting with a Tottenham free-kick, the live nature of the match prevented their intervention.

IFAB rules on VAR stipulate that play cannot be brought back once it has resumed, except in cases of mistaken identity or potential sending-off offenses related to violent conduct, spitting, biting, or extremely offensive actions.
